Karkadé, en arabe كركديه, est le nom donné en Egypte et au Moyen-Orient à la boisson à base d’hibiscus, plus connue en Afrique sous le nom de bissap. C’est autour d’un verre glacé couleur framboise que l’idée de créer notre structure est née, un jour d’automne 2022 à Hammamet, où Anne, Chirine et Jule, co-fondatrices de l’agence Karkadé, étaient réunies pour des rencontres professionnelles. Travaillant autour d’un projet de coopération culturelle internationale (LEILA, Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe) porté par les structures au sein desquelles elles évoluaient alors, l’envie est venue de pousser plus loin leur collaboration autour de leur amour pour la littérature, leur intérêt pour les sciences humaines et sociales, les arts et la culture en général, et leur connaissance du monde arabe. L’idée de l’agence Karkadé a commencé à germer, s’est nourrie de leurs expériences respectives, et voit le jour officiellement en février 2024.
Karkadeh, in Arabic كركديه, is the name given in Egypt and the Middle East to the hibiscus-based drink, better known in Africa as bissap. It was over an ice-cold raspberry-coloured glass that the idea of creating our structure was born, one autumn day in 2022 in Hammamet, where Anne, Chirine and Jule, co-founders of the Karkadé agency, were gathered for professional meetings. Working on an international cultural cooperation project (LEILA, Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe) supported by the organisations they were involved with at the time, they decided to take a step further in sharing their love of literature, their interest in the humanities and social sciences, the arts and culture in general, and their knowledge of the Arab world. The idea of the Karkadé agency began to take shape, drawing on their respective experiences, and was officially born in February 2024.

Diplômée de Sciences Po Paris, formée à l’Institut Français du Proche-Orient à Beyrouth, Chirine El Messiri s’est spécialisée dans la diplomatie culturelle et la programmation artistique. Après une première expérience à l’Institut du monde arabe, où elle coordonne les deux premières éditions des Rendez-vous de l’Histoire du monde arabe, elle travaille au SCAC de l’Ambassade de France aux Emirats arabes unis. Elle œuvre alors pour des projets d’envergure, notamment l’inauguration du Louvre Abu Dhabi. De retour en France, elle retrouve l’IMA pour y créer et diriger des rencontres et débats, et une collection éditoriale (en partenariat avec le Seuil) : Araborama. Jusqu’en 2022, elle invitera sur scène comme à l’écrit les jeunesses, artistes, activistes, intellectuel-le-s du monde arabe, mêlant les genres et les disciplines. A son compte depuis, elle accompagne des projets artistiques et diplomatiques à travers le monde. Elle enseigne la conception de projets culturels en contexte international à la Sorbonne-Nouvelle et à l’ISIT.
After graduating from Sciences Po Paris and studying at the Institut Français du Proche-Orient in Beirut, Chirine El Messiri specialised in cultural diplomacy and artistic programming. She worked at the Institut du Monde Arabe, where she coordinated the first two editions of their 'Rendez-vous de l'Histoire'. She then joined the Cultural Department of the French Embassy in the United Arab Emirates, and worked on a number of large-scale projects, including the inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Back to France and to IMA, she created and managed talks & debates, and a new editorial collection (in partnership with Seuil): Araborama. Until 2022, she has been inviting young people, artists, activists and intellectuals from the Arab world to perform and write, mixing genres and disciplines. Since then, she has worked as an independant consultant on artistic and diplomatic projects around the world. She teaches cultural project in an international context at Sorbonne-Nouvelle and ISIT.

ANNE MILLET
Diplômée en histoire et sciences politiques de l'Université de la Sorbonne et de l'Université Saint Joseph de Beyrouth, elle travaille pendant huit ans comme responsable communication et relations presse dans la musique et l'art contemporain, notamment pour les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers. En 2015, elle reprend des études d'arabe à l'INALCO puis au Caire, où elle collabore avec l'Institut français et le bureau du livre. Responsable des événements littéraires et de la programmation à l'iReMMO de 2017 à 2023, elle y a co-organisé le Maghreb-Orient des livres pendant cinq ans avant de fonder le festival Adab, dédié aux littératures contemporaines du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient, dont la première édition a eu lieu à La Maison de la Poésie de Paris en décembre 2023. Elle a co-fondé et coordonné le projet LEILA, Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe de 2019 à 2023. En 2022 et 2023, elle a créé puis dirigé l’antenne de l'institut à Marseille, iReMMO-Suds. Elle exerce depuis comme consultante indépendante en programmation et conseil artistiques.
A graduate in history and political science from the Sorbonne University and Saint Joseph's University in Beirut, she worked for eight years as communications and press relations manager in the field of music and contemporary art, notably for Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers. In 2015, she resumed her Arabic studies at INALCO and then in Cairo, Egypt, where she worked with the French Institute and the Book Office. In charge of literary events and programming at iReMMO from 2017 to 2023, she co-organised the Maghreb-Orient des livres for five years before founding in 2023 at La Maison de la poésie (Paris) the Adab festival, dedicated to MENA contemporary literature. She co-founded and coordinated the LEILA project, Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe, from 2019 to 2023. In 2022 and 2023, she set up and managed the Marseille branch of the institute, iReMMO-Suds. Since then she has worked as an independent consultant in artistic programming and consultancy.
Jule Rubi
Formée à l'Ecole du Louvre et à Sciences Po Aix en Politique culturelle et mécénat, elle travaille pendant cinq ans au Victoria and Albert Museum à Londres au sein du département Théâtre et Performance, ou elle évolue d'assistante à commissaire d'expositions, en travaillant sur des projets de taille variée avec des partenaires aussi divers que le Musée du Prado, la Royal Opera House ou encore les conservatoires londoniens. En 2018, elle quitte Londres pour Mascate pour monter l'exposition "Opera : 400 years of passion" à la Royal Opera House Muscat, puis en rentrant en France rejoint l'agence Cassonmann pour la scénographie du Musée National de la Marine à Paris. Fascinée par les langues et le pont entre les cultures que représente la traduction, elle a également travaillé pendant deux ans auprès d'ATLAS et de l'Institut français pour promouvoir la traduction de l'arabe vers le français et les langues européennes. Depuis novembre 2023, elle exerce en tant que muséographe et cheffe de projets culturels indépendante.
Trained at the Ecole du Louvre and Sciences Po Aix in Cultural Policy and Fundraising, she worked for five years at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in the Theatre and Performance department, where she progressed from assistant to exhibition curator, working on projects of various sizes with partners as diverse as the Prado Museum, the Royal Opera House and London conservatoires. In 2018, she left London for Muscat to mount the exhibition ‘Opera: 400 years of passion’ at the Royal Opera House Muscat, then on her return to France joined the Cassonmann agency for the scenography of the Musée National de la Marine in Paris. Fascinated by languages and the bridge between cultures that translation represents, she also worked for two years with ATLAS and the French Institute to promote translation from Arabic into French and other European languages. Since November 2023, she has worked as a freelance museographer and cultural project manager.
