The TALE Project – Translating Arabic Literature in Europe brings together five partners around three main objectives: to promote inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and linguistic diversity in the Euro-Mediterranean area; to support the independent publishing sector and the actors of the book chain; and finally, to foster and increase the circulation in Europe of Arabic-language narratives written by residents of the European Union.
It follows on from the “LEILA – Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe” project (2021–2023), funded by the Creative Europe programme. Agence Karkadé has brought together four independent publishers to publish six works from the LEILA catalogue in four European languages. The partner publishers are based in Italy (Tamu Edizioni), Cyprus (Armida Books), Ireland (Mercier Press), and France (Cambourakis).
The works translated as part of the project were originally written in Arabic by authors residing in the European Union and have been little or not translated in Europe. The aim of the TALE project is to offer these authors a readership in Europe, to increase their mobility and visibility within EU countries, to enable them to have their works translated, published, and circulated there, and to bring them into contact with European audiences through a programme of community-wide literary encounters.

Le projet TALE – Translating Arabic Literature in Europe réunit cinq partenaires autour de trois objectifs principaux : promouvoir l’inclusion, le dialogue interculturel et la diversité linguistique dans l’espace euro-méditerranéen ; soutenir le secteur de l’édition indépendante et les acteurs de la chaîne du livre ; et enfin, favoriser et accroître la circulation en Europe de récits en langue arabe écrits par des résident·e·s de l’Union européenne.
Il s’inscrit dans la continuité du projet "LEILA – Promoting Arabic Literature in Europe" (2021-2023), financé par le programme Europe Créative. L’Agence Karkadé a réuni quatre maisons d’édition indépendantes afin de publier six ouvrages issus du catalogue LEILA dans quatre langues européennes. Les éditeurs partenaires sont basés en Italie (Tamu Edizioni), à Chypre (Armida Books), en Irlande (Mercier Press) et en France (Cambourakis).
Les œuvres traduites dans le cadre du projet ont été initialement écrites en arabe par des auteur·rice·s résidant dans l’Union européenne et ont été peu ou pas traduites en Europe. L’objectif du projet TALE est d’offrir à ces auteur·rice·s un lectorat européen, d’accroître leur mobilité et leur visibilité au sein des pays de l’UE, de leur permettre de voir leurs œuvres traduites, publiées et diffusées, et de les mettre en relation avec les publics européens à travers un programme de rencontres littéraires à l’échelle communautaire.
